Importing Electronics to Japan?

Importing electronics into Japan can be confusing. COVUE provides Japan IOR support both non-regulated and regulated electronics.

Electronics fall under two categories.

Electronic imports are divided into 2 categories Regulated Electronics and Non-Regulated Electronics.
Non-Regulated Electronics
Not for military use

Does not include Wall adaptor
(mains power)
Contains sealed Lithium-Ion battery not accessible by user
Does not emit radio frequency
(Bluetooth/ Wifi)
NiCad Batteries required
Regulated Electronics
For military use
(Japan government approval required)
Includes Wall adaptor A/C power
Emits a Radio Signal - Bluetooth/Wifi
Contains sealed Lithium-Ion battery accessible by user
Japan Radio Regulation required
PSE Regulation Required
Import Process for regulated electronics requiring PSE:
  1. Manufacture obtain PSE certification to METI standards from an accredited agency (ex: TUV SUD).
  2. Register COVUE as your IOR
  3. Japan IOR must apply for a supplemental PSE application on behalf of the manufacturer
  4. All PSE-regulated products or parts must receive a PSE inspection. Inspecting reports must be kept on file with the Japan IOR. The manufacture may perform the PSE tests or COVUE can perform the PSE test on behalf of the manufacture COVUE is the IOR.
  5. Create your Japan Product Label. The label must be displayed on the product and must be compliant with Japan labeling laws.
  6. The PSE mark must be displayed on the product
  7. The IOR’s Name and Address must be displayed near the PSE mark.
Pre-Import Process for regulated electronics requiring Japan Radio:
  1. Manufacture obtain Japan Radio certification from an accredited agency (ex: TUV SUD).
  2. Register COVUE as your IOR
  3. The Japan Radio mark must be displayed on the product
  4. Create your Japan Product Label. The label must be displayed on the product and must be compliant with Japan labeling laws.
  5. COVUE IOR Name and Address must be displayed near the Japan Radio mark.
